Wedding Monograms. Everything You Need to Know

There’s something about monograms that simply oozes sophistication. If you’re looking to take your luxury wedding to the next level, a monogram might be exactly what you need! Our comprehensive guide takes you through everything you need to know about wedding monograms so that you can really personalise your marriage celebrations.

What is a Wedding Monogram

Let’s start with the basics. A monogram is typically made up of 3 letters (the initials of a person’s first name, middle name and surname), however, a wedding monogram usually consists of only two letters – the initial of each of the couple’s first names.

In certain cases, a couple may choose to create a 3 letter monogram using the initials of their first names, as well as their future shared surname. While it is absolutely up to you what you do on your special day, it is worth noting that wedding etiquette states you should only use the 3, rather than the 2, letter monogram after the wedding ceremony has occurred.

How to Create Your Couple Monogram

Once you’ve decided to create a monogram, you will need to choose how you want to design it. Essentially, you have two options: DIY or hire a professional. There is a range of graphic designers that you can engage to create your custom wedding monogram, curating according to your personal preferences as to colour, font and style.

Alternatively, you can create your own using monogram design software, along the lines of Canva. There is no single way to design a monogram as it all comes down to personal taste, however, there is a range of characteristics that you should definitely consider.

These are:

  • Colour – Determine your wedding colour palette and use this in your monogram.
  • Style – The style of the monogram should align with the overall theme of your wedding.
  • Font – Choose a matching font, being mindful to only use one, maximum two, different fonts.
  • Size – Not so big to detract from the overall look, yet big enough to make a statement.
  • Name – A two-letter monogram, or three? You can use the initials of your first names, or your first name initials combined with the initial of your surname, to create a wedding monogram.
  • Placement – Placement will play a role in the overall look of your vision for the big day. Using a monogram on various products will create a cohesive aesthetic, but remember not to go overboard!

  • Table runner – 4-5 inches tall, one monogram placed at each end of the runner.
  • Table cloth – 4-6 inches tall, placed in each corner at a 45° angle.
  • Placemats – 1-2 inches tall, top right corner.

Additional Things to Know About Wedding Monograms

  • Wedding monograms traditionally have the bride’s initial on the left, the groom’s initial on the right, and the initial of their shared last name in the middle.
  • A couple monogram containing the initial of the married surname should only be used after the ceremony (i.e. not on invitations).
  • Your wedding monogram should be a reflection of you.
  • Traditional etiquette surrounding wedding monograms should only be used as a guide. After all, it’s your monogram and your day!

Most importantly, don’t forget to have fun creating the perfect reflection of you as a couple!
