SPOTLIGHT ON: Maskit. The Legendary Israeli Fashion House

In celebration of Israel’s upcoming 70th birthday, we’d like to highlight one of the country’s most legendary fashion brands – Maskit.

Founded in 1954 by Ruth Dayan, first wife of the late general and politician Moshe Dayan, Maskit underwent a number of incarnations before closing in 1994. It was recently revitalized by designer Sharon Tal and her companion Nir Tal, in a stunning capacity – featuring a Bridal Collection, Ready-to-Wear, and various options for special events.

In its storied past, Maskit collaborated with top ateliers like Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent and Dior. It was featured in American Vogue in 1969, with a photo shoot highlighting Israel’s regional desert landscapes. Its garments and products were offered as official gifts by the State of Israel to diplomats and heads of state. Now, more than two decades after it shuttered its ornate doors, the legendary Israeli fashion house has re-emerged, restoring the glory of its past.

Designer Sharon Tal was born and raised in Tel Aviv and graduated with honors from the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, Israel’s leading design school. She started her career with an internship at Lanvin in Paris under the former chief designer, Alber Elbaz. She was then appointed as the head of embroidery at Alexander McQueen in London. Since starting a family and returning to Israel, Sharon has infused Maskit’s rich heritage with modern fashion and exclusive designs.

Maskit has three boutiques in Israel and has a significant international presence, holding many international events around the United States, Canada and Europe.

Visiting their flagship boutique in Jaffa is a sight to be seen. It marries Israel’s historic landscape, design and architecture with contemporary touches – a nod to the past while defining an authentic, local take on bridal, evening and special occasion wear.
